Birth
Sarah Randall was the daughter of William Randall and Sarah Gooding. She was born in about 1855 in Hamilton before the family moved to Elmira. The date comes from the 1861 census when Sarah is listed as 7 years of age, one year younger than her older brother Charles.Henry Addis was born in Carrick Township, Bruce County on April 5, 1864, a son of Francis Addis and his wife Lena Brenner who were born in Germany. They had a large family and lived in Greenock, Bruce South in 1881.
Marriage
Sarah was living at the home of her younger sister, George and Caroline Cathrae, when the 1881 census was taken. A child David who was born the previous August is listed below Sarah's name. The Cathrae's are Presbyterian and Sarah and the boy are Methodist so the child was Sarah's son. ![]()
Sarah was married to Henry Addis in Elmira on September 20, 1884. The information comes from the Ontario Archive for 1884, reference #011882.

- The marriage record says that Sarah was born in about 1862, but the census of 1861 records her as being 7 years old in that year. The 1881 census says she was 26 years old. Sarah was older than 22 years in 1884. Henry really was 22 years old, backed up by the 1881 and 1901 census.
From the 1891 census, Henry and Sarah Addis were living in Woolwich Twp. His age is given as 26 years and she is 35. Even more puzzling is the daughter Luce (Lucy?) who is 16 years old. The child David who was recorded with Sarah in the 1881 census is not listed. ![]()
Death
Sarah's death is recorded in the Ontario Death Index for 1899, #026376. She died in Woolwich Township on May 11, 1899. The Elmira Signet of the day and the two Berlin newspapers did not contain an obituary.Name: Adis, Sarah Sex: F[emale] Date: 11th May 1899 Age: 45 yrs / 7 mos Residence: Woolwich [Twp] Occ: Wife of Henry Adis married Born: Hamilton, [Ont] Religion: Methodist Cause: Cancer, One year Physician: Dr. J Evans By: Rev A.M. - Doing the math, Sarah would have been born in October of 1853 from the age in her death record. She was younger than her brother Charles, so a date of October 1855 is suggested.
- This is another indication that the Randalls lived in the city of Hamilton.
In the 1901 census shortly after Sarah's death, Henry was living at the home of a brother-in-law, Adolph Lang and his wife Mary A. Addis, in Greenock. In 1908 he married again to Annie O'Brien and after her death in 1912 Henry married a third time to Margaret Heaney in 1912. Henry died in Walkerton on December 1, 1928.
